Share
On 3 May 2025, Wellington’s Lyall Bay was buzzing as the Gurfers “Queen of the Corner” surf competition brought together local women surfers across five categories (beginner, intermediate shortboard, intermediate longboard, advanced shortboard, and advanced longboard) for a day of waves, support, and celebration.
From Storm to Surf
In the days preceding the event, Wellington had seen a major storm with winds gusting up to 60 km/h and a messy, churning sea. There was real uncertainty about whether the competition could go ahead, but the skies cleared just in time: by the morning of the 3rd, the weather turned calm, and the swell moderated. Lyall Bay delivered solid larger waves in the morning and gentle rideable breaks in the afternoon, providing fun conditions for all levels.
The Corner Scene
The Corner, Wellington’s surf break located by the airport runway, came alive with friendly energy. Surf fans, friends and families gathered on the shoreline to support and cheer on the participants. Commentary over the day kept the plays and wipeouts exciting, and the field of competitors offered a full line‑up of inspiring local women. Each heat was marked by camaraderie, encouragement, and high‑spirited competition. A celebration of skill at every level.
Post‑Surf Vibes at Parrot Dog
After the final heats, competitors and supporters made their way to Parrot Dog Brewery for a prizegiving ceremony and drinks. Tamara proudly served as a sponsor, reinforcing its commitment to women’s surfing and sustainable watersport culture. Laughter and stories flew over local brews as the community congratulated winners and celebrated the day's effort, resilience, and shared love for the ocean.
The Essence of the Day
The Gurfers' "Queen of the Corner" event stood out as an inspiring blend of resilience, community, and authentic fun. Far from a high‑pressure championship, the competition carried a warm and inviting energy, with women cheering for each other, spectators lining the beach, and competitors across all levels supporting each other’s waves. From the morning's bigger swell to softer afternoon sets, every division, from beginners trialling their first turns to advanced shortboard and longboard riders, found their rhythm in a welcoming environment. The competition wasn’t just about winning, it was about coming together, riding the ocean’s energy, and lifting each other up.
Looking Ahead
Events like the Gurfers “Queen of the Corner” competition create more than just surf highlights: they build connection, confidence, and visibility for women in the local surfing community. As waves calm and temperatures fall, we can’t wait for the next iteration of this inspiring local tradition.
