How to care for your swimwear: tips to keep your togs like new, season after season

With summer (and more salty, splashy adventures) coming up, your swimwear is about to get a regular workout. But you don’t want your favourite suits to fade, sag, or lose shape after just a few wears. With some simple care rituals, washing, drying, and storing, you can keep your swimwear performing beautifully year after year. Here’s how.

Rinse immediately after use

As soon as you can, ideally right after your swim, rinse your swimsuit in cool, fresh water. Whether you were in salt water or a chlorinated pool, rinsing helps flush out salt, sand, sunscreen residue, and chlorine that can degrade fibres over time. Many swimwear care guides emphasise that this quick rinse is one of the most important steps in prolonging your swimwear’s life.

Hand wash gently, never machine (if you can help it)

For the majority of swimsuits, hand washing with a gentle detergent is best. Use a mild soap designed for delicates, or a neutral cleanser, and swirl it in cool water. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric harshly. Press gently to work the soap through. This helps protect the elastic fibres and keeps the shape intact.

If you must use a washing machine, place the suit in a mesh laundry bag and use the delicate cycle with cold water only. But wherever possible, hand washing is safer and kinder to the fabric.

Dry smart: flat, in shade, no heat

After washing, gently press out excess water. Don’t wring or twist. Lay your swimsuit flat on a clean towel, preferably in the shade, to air dry. Avoid hanging by straps (which can stretch them) or exposing them to direct sun, which can fade colours and weaken fabric. Don’t tumble dry; heat is a sworn enemy of elastics.

Store with Care

Once your swimsuit is fully dry, store it thoughtfully:

  • Keep suits flat or gently folded, not crumpled, so elastic isn’t strained.
  • Store them in a cool, dry drawer or storage box.
  • Avoid storing when still damp (this can lead to mildew or musty smells).
  • Keep suits out of direct sunlight or heat in storage, the same way you’d protect a favourite print or fabric from fading.

Small habits that make a big difference

  • Avoid rough surfaces: Sitting on rocks, concrete edges, or rough benches can snag fabric. Use a towel or cover when you sit.
  • Rotate your suits: If you have more than one, alternate between them so the elastic fibers in each get some recovery time.
  • Skip harsh chemicals: Bleach, strong detergents, or fabric softeners can harm the elasticity. Use gentle cleansers only.
  • Check for stains early: If sunscreen, oil, or chlorinated water leaves marks, treat them gently before they set.
  • Wear with care: Be cautious putting on or taking off your suit, fiddly nails or jewellery can cause snags.

With these routines, you’re giving your swimwear the respect it deserves. Your togs will stay vibrant, supportive, and ready for every water sport session you throw at them.
