Winter Ocean Reads, Films & Podcasts
Share
Winter has a way of slowing things down.
The ocean might be colder, the days a little shorter, and getting changed after a swim requires just a bit more determination. But it's also the season for slowing down with a good book, finding a new documentary, or listening to something inspiring on the drive to your next ocean adventure.
These are three recommendations we've been enjoying lately.
š Read: The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
Inspired by the real lives of South Korea's haenyeo, women who have free-dived for generations, The Island of Sea Women is a beautifully written novel about friendship, resilience, and a lifelong connection to the ocean.
It's the kind of book that stays with you long after you've finished the final page, and one that made us appreciate just how deeply the ocean can shape a community.
š¬ Watch: Maiden (2018)
If you haven't watched Maiden yet, we'd highly recommend adding it to your list.
The documentary follows Tracy Edwards and the first all-female crew to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in 1989. It's an inspiring story of determination, teamwork, and challenging expectations, while celebrating the power of backing yourself, even when others don't.
Whether you're into sailing or not, it's hard not to finish the film feeling motivated.
š§ Listen:Ā 21st Century Mermaids
One podcast we keep coming back to is 21st Century Mermaids.
Each episode features conversations with women whose lives and work revolve around the ocean: from scientists and conservationists to divers, adventurers and storytellers. It's thoughtful, inspiring, and always leaves us learning something new about the blue spaces we all love.
Perfect for a morning commute, a road trip to the coast, or while folding washing after a swim.
More than just winter entertainment
For us, these aren't just recommendations for passing the time.
They're reminders of the many different ways people connect with the ocean; through stories, exploration, science, adventure, and community. Even when we're not in the water, they help us stay connected to the places and people that inspire us to keep getting back out there.
If you've read a great book, watched an inspiring film, or discovered a podcast you think our community would love, we'd love to hear about it. Send us a message on Instagram or reply to one of our emails. We're always looking for our next recommendation.
